Kids on the steps for trick-or-treat means the adult session hasn't started.

One adult stays on the door until the sidewalk is quiet. A guest who wants to step outside with a joint moves away from the steps. The porch light is for candy, and the session starts after that.

When can the adult session start if kids are on the steps? #

The adult session starts after one adult has stayed on the door and the sidewalk has gone quiet.

The light over the door is the candy signal. While kids are still coming up, that adult's job is the bowl and the steps. A gap between groups doesn't open the session. If the street's still moving, you're still handing out candy.

Your block sets the window. The City of Detroit didn't post one residential hour for every porch, so you don't borrow a clock from a headline in another township. You watch your own sidewalk. When it's quiet, and it stays quiet, the session can start. If your block runs late, you run late with it.

Here's the order that keeps the door job and the session from sharing the same five minutes.

Step What you're doing When it ends
Bowl out, jar put away Candy on the table, weed back in the locked spot Before the first kid hits the steps
One adult on the door Handing out candy, watching the steps When the sidewalk stays quiet
Guest who wants a joint Off the steps, off the kid path Until you say the session's on
Session Adults only, after the street empties When you're done, and nobody still has to drive

A pumpkin and a lantern can sit on the porch. They're the whole seasonal setup. The light over the door is the part that tells the block you're handing out candy.

If you punch out of a Detroit shift and the block's already dark, the door job is still first. Dark doesn't mean the kids went home. It means the porch light is doing the work the sun just quit.

What do you do with a guest who wants to step outside with a joint? #

That guest moves away from the steps, and they don't smoke into the kids.

The friend who lights up on the top step is about to have a very short talk with you. The steps are a candy line. Parents are standing at the bottom of them. A joint doesn't belong in that line.

You own or occupy the house, so you can set the rule. Michigan's adult-use law lets a person prohibit or regulate consumption on property they own, occupy, or manage. Tell the guest the steps are off limits. They don't get a vote.

Where they can go, if you allow it at all:

  • The backyard, if kids aren't walking through it and the smoke isn't pouring at the front door.
  • The side of the house, same test, away from the steps and the sidewalk.
  • Inside a room the kids aren't using, with the door shut, if you actually want smoke in the house.
  • Nowhere, until the sidewalk is quiet, if that's the rule you picked.

The sidewalk in front of the house is the kid path. The same law doesn't authorize consuming weed in a public place. It doesn't define every sidewalk in that sentence, so don't turn the statute into a map of your block. Do the simple thing. The guest doesn't use the sidewalk as a smoke spot while you're handing out candy.

A city-designated consumption spot is a separate setup under that section, and a trick-or-treat porch isn't one. You're not looking for a lounge. You're keeping a joint off the steps.

Anyone under 21 doesn't get the joint, the jar, or a handoff "for later." The act doesn't authorize a transfer of weed to a person under 21, and it doesn't authorize anyone under 21 to possess it or consume it. A lit joint on the steps is a bad place to test that.

If you rent, read the lease before you offer the backyard. A lease can't ban a tenant from lawfully consuming by some way other than smoking. It can still ban smoking. The guest follows the house.

Once the sidewalk's quiet and you're actually in a session, passing and pacing sit on the session etiquette post. Don't open that circle on the steps. Don't make a guest who said they're done tonight take a hit to be polite. The host's job is a glass of water and a clear rule, not a speech.

Does Detroit have a citywide trick-or-treat hour? #

No. The City of Detroit hasn't posted one residential trick-or-treat hour, so your block sets the porch window.

What Detroit did post is a set of city events. The Halloween in the D page lists trunk-or-treat times at police precincts, fire stations, and recreation centers. Those clocks don't match. The 9th Precinct slot on that page is 5 to 8 pm The 8th Precinct slot is 2 to 5 pm The page says those city activities generally fall between 4 and 8 pm, and the times vary by location.

Those clocks belong to those city spots. A house on your street still follows its own sidewalk. If your block is still busy at 8, you're still on the door. If your block emptied at 7, you don't stand there because a precinct across town is still open.

The City of Detroit's October 13, 2026 release talks about kids at fire stations, police precincts, and recreation centers. It doesn't hand every residential block one shared hour. Follow the kids on your sidewalk.

A few ways people mix this up:

  • Treating a precinct trunk-or-treat clock as the hour for the whole city.
  • Copying another township's suggested window onto your porch.
  • Starting the session because the sun's down, while kids are still on the steps.
  • Leaving the door empty because "someone" is watching from the couch.

The door still needs a person until the sidewalk stays quiet. The couch doesn't count.

What did Waterford Township suggest for this Saturday? #

Waterford Township suggested 6 to 8 pm on Saturday, October 31, 2026, and that note is Waterford's.

The Waterford Township event notice says suggested trick-or-treat hours in Waterford are 6 to 8 pm that Saturday. It also says many neighborhoods choose to set their own hours, while others stick to the suggestion. So even inside that township, the suggestion isn't a lock on every street.

Waterford Township is in Oakland County. Don't paste 6 to 8 pm onto a Detroit block because the notice was easy to find. If you live in Waterford, read your own block against that suggestion. If you live in Detroit, watch your sidewalk.

The same notice talks to drivers. Motorists should use extra caution, obey posted speed limits, avoid distractions, watch for people on foot, and allow extra time because traffic runs heavier. That's a Halloween driving note for Waterford. The sober-driver job on your block is in the driving section below, and the blood-test piece stays on its own post.

Kids on that Waterford notice get the usual night advice: look both ways, reflective gear, a flashlight, and a group or an adult. None of that's a reason to put a joint on your steps.

Why does the porch light matter before 7 pm? #

On this Saturday in Detroit, the sun sets at 6:27 pm and civil twilight ends at 6:56 pm, so a normal candy window runs into the dark.

Those minutes are on the US Naval Observatory table for Detroit coordinates 42.331, -83.046. The table was pulled with the clock offset at -4, which is the daylight-time clock. Sunset is 6:27 pm Civil twilight ends at 6:56 pm

So the porch light isn't decoration. By the time a lot of blocks are in the middle of candy, the sun's gone and twilight's going with it. Kids are still walking. The adult on the door is still on the door. The session still waits.

If you're using Waterford's suggestion only as Waterford's own window, 6 pm is before this sunset and 8 pm is after twilight. Their notice already told drivers to watch people on foot in that stretch. Your block can be on a different clock, and it can still be dark while you're handing out candy.

A pumpkin and a lantern show the porch. The bulb over the door tells the street you're open for candy. When you turn that light off, you're telling the block you're done. Turn it off when you're actually done, not when you want the session to start.

Who drives the kids from house to house? #

The person driving kids stays sober, and nobody smokes in the car.

Michigan's adult-use law doesn't authorize operating a motor vehicle under the influence of weed. It also doesn't authorize consuming weed while you're at the wheel, or smoking in the passenger area of a vehicle on a public way. Both lines are in MCL 333.27954. The car between houses is still a car. The joint stays out of it.

If you already smoked, you don't take the kids to the next block. You don't take them home, either, if you're the driver. Hand the keys to an adult who hasn't smoked and hasn't been drinking. If that person is also the adult on your door, they haven't started the session yet. The door can wait. The drive can't.

What a blood test can and can't say about impairment is a different article. Read blood THC versus impairment when you want that piece. Tonight's rule is shorter. Driving the kids is a sober job.

Waterford's notice already asked motorists to slow down, skip distractions, and watch people on foot. A street full of kids needs the same kind of attention. The township hours don't travel with you. The sober driver does.

If the guest who wanted a joint is also the person who drove in, they park and they stay parked. They can move off the steps. They can't turn the ride home into the session.

Where does the jar go while the candy bowl is out? #

The jar goes back in the locked spot before the bowl comes out, and nothing from that jar goes near the candy.

The lockbox how-to is already written. Use child-resistant storage before the bowl for the box, the bag, and the home setup. This page isn't that post. Tonight's move is the order: locked spot first, bowl second, door third.

Divine Toke doesn't sell edibles. The jar means flower, a 1 gram pre-roll, the 20-pack, Honey Bananas solventless rosin, or Sundog bio hash. None of that goes in the bowl, next to the bowl, or in a spare dish "so the adults can find it." Kids are grabbing from that table. A pre-roll looks like a piece of candy to a kid who isn't reading a label.

Lookalike packs are a different problem, and they already have a page. The five-point check lives on the lookalike-pack post. If someone walked in with a pouch that looks like a candy brand, it doesn't join the bowl either. It leaves the room.

Keep this split straight:

  • Candy bowl: candy you meant to hand out.
  • Locked spot: flower, pre-rolls, rosin, hash.
  • Guest's pocket: their own weed, off the steps, not on the candy table.
  • Car: no smoking, and no session on the way to the next house.

An adult 21 or older can use weed at home inside the limits of MCL 333.27955, except where section 4 draws a line. The Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency posts that adult-use act. The age line is 21. A porch full of kids is the wrong minute for that home rule. Wait until the sidewalk is quiet.

What about a pet, a lookalike pack, or a guest from out of state? #

Point at the post that already did the job, then get back on the door.

The dog or the cat and an open door are a bad mix if a joint, a pre-roll, or a bit of flower hits the floor. What to do if a pet already ate cannabis is on the pet page. Tonight, don't leave the jar where a dog can shop the candy table. Shut the weed away before you prop the door.

A lookalike edible pack doesn't get a second lecture here. That packaging page above is the one to use. Divine Toke still doesn't sell edibles, so there's nothing in our mailer that belongs in a trick-or-treat bowl.

A guest who drove in from Ohio, Indiana, or anywhere across a state line already has a travel post. Hosting, the car, and the state line are on the Labor Day hosting piece. Don't turn tonight into that essay. They still move off the steps. They still don't drive your kids. They still don't lay their weed next to the bowl.

If they want the house rules in one breath, give them these:

  • Steps are for candy.
  • Smoke, if you allow it, is away from the kids.
  • The car is sober.
  • The jar stays put away.
  • The session starts when the sidewalk is quiet.

That's the whole porch. The other posts can wait until the light's off.

Can mail order arrive while you're on the door? #

No. A jar you order while the porch light's on won't be in your hand for this door.

Divine Toke sells Michigan sun-grown flower by mail, along with 1 gram pre-rolls, the 20-pack, Honey Bananas solventless rosin, and Sundog bio hash. We don't sell edibles. We don't run a porch pickup. If the session after a quiet sidewalk needs flower, it has to be flower you already put in the locked spot.

You're handing out candy. Order another night if you want more flower later. The shop is at divinetoke.org.

FAQ #

Can I take a quick smoke between groups of kids? #

No. A lull between groups leaves the door job running. The light's still on, and the next group can hit the steps while you're lighting it. Stay on the door until the sidewalk stays quiet. Then you can step away.

Is the sidewalk in front of the house a fine spot for a joint? #

No. The sidewalk is the kid path, and Michigan law doesn't authorize consuming weed in a public place. MCL 333.27954 is the section. It doesn't draw your property line for you. Keep the guest off the sidewalk while kids are out.

Does a 6 to 8 pm township note set my Detroit block? #

No. Waterford Township suggested 6 to 8 pm for Waterford, and many of its neighborhoods set their own hours. That Waterford notice is Oakland County. Your block follows the kids on its own sidewalk. The City of Detroit didn't post one residential hour.

Do I wait for full dark, or for a quiet sidewalk? #

You wait for a quiet sidewalk. In Detroit on this Saturday, sunset is 6:27 pm and civil twilight ends at 6:56 pm on the US Naval Observatory table. The street can be dark while kids are still walking. Dark isn't the signal. A quiet sidewalk is.

Where can a guest smoke if I say the steps are off limits? #

Only where you allow it, away from the steps and the kids. Backyard or side of the house if kids aren't walking through and you actually said yes. If you didn't, they wait. You can prohibit smoking on property you own or occupy under MCL 333.27954.

Who stays sober if the kids still need a ride? #

The driver stays sober, even if everyone else is ready for a session. Michigan law doesn't authorize driving under the influence, consuming at the wheel, or smoking in the passenger area on a public way. If you already smoked, the keys go to someone who hasn't. The longer Michigan driving piece is blood THC versus impairment.

Can anything from the jar go in the candy bowl? #

No. Flower, pre-rolls, rosin, and hash stay in the locked spot. Divine Toke doesn't sell edibles, and nothing from the jar goes near the bowl. The storage steps are on the lockbox post.

What if someone brought lookalike candy packs into the house? #

They don't go in the bowl. The lookalike rules are on the fake-pack post. Pull the pouch out of the candy pile and put it away. The kids are here for the candy you meant to hand out.

What if the dog is underfoot while the door is open? #

Put the weed away before you prop the door. A dropped joint and an open door are how a pet gets into it. If that already happened, use the pet page. Don't leave the jar on the candy table while you sort the leash.

Will a mail-order jar arrive before the sidewalk is quiet? #

No. Mail order won't land in your hand in the middle of the door job. Divine Toke ships sun-grown flower. Use what you already locked up, or order for another night at divinetoke.org.

After the sidewalk is quiet #

The session can start when one adult has stayed on the door and the sidewalk has gone quiet. A guest who wanted a joint already moved off the steps. The driver, if the kids still need a ride, stayed sober.

If you want flower for a later night, Divine Toke sells Michigan sun-grown flower by mail. Edibles aren't part of the shop. The shop is divinetoke.org.
