I'm Jamie. I grow sun-grown flower in Michigan, and Divine Toke sells it by mail from Detroit. We have no counter, and $59.99 isn't our price. It comes from licensed shop sales across the state.

What Is the Average Price of an Ounce in Michigan Right Now? #

Adult-use flower averaged $59.99 an ounce for September 1 through September 30, 2026. That line is labeled "Average Retail Flower Price (oz.)" in the Cannabis Regulatory Agency September 2026 monthly report. All the monthly reports are listed on the CRA statistical reports page.

The same adult-use table puts retail sales at $242,263,191.56. Flower was $98,731,558.17 of that, on 102,858.17 pounds. MITechNews published a walkthrough on October 15, 2026. The dollars below come straight from the CRA report.

September 2026 line Adult-use Medical
Average retail flower price per ounce $59.99 $82.34
Sales for the month $242,263,191.56 $264,549.07
Flower sales $98,731,558.17 $98,467.81

Medical is a different section of the same file. Its ounce price is $82.34. Its whole month of sales is $264,549.07. Adult-use sales that month were more than 900 times larger. Mix up those two ounce lines and you're comparing two markets.

Other adult-use rows sit next to flower. None of them is the ounce average:

  • Shake and trim: 39,802.84 pounds, $20,456,184.31.
  • Vape cartridges: $46,610,555.12.
  • Inhalable compound concentrate: $41,853,844.30.
  • Infused edibles: $19,591,024.09.

Flower was the biggest product row and still came in under half the month. About 41 cents of each adult-use sales dollar was flower ($98,731,558.17 of $242,263,191.56).

Adult-use sales to date through September 30 were $15,654,302,567.78 in that same file. September is the month the ounce line slipped under $60.

How Does the State Compute That Ounce Price? #

The $59.99 is flower dollars divided by flower ounces. The September report doesn't print a methods note. The printed average matches this math.

An ounce is one-sixteenth of a pound. Pounds times 16 is the ounce count.

Step September adult-use flower
Pounds sold 102,858.17
Ounces (pounds × 16) 1,645,730.72
Flower sales $98,731,558.17
Dollars per ounce $59.99

$98,731,558.17 divided by 1,645,730.72 ounces is $59.9925. The CRA rounds that to $59.99.

What goes into that blend:

  • It is a weighted average, so big sales count for more. Lots of cheap ounces pull it down faster than one pricey eighth pulls it up.
  • Menu stickers on jars that never sold stay out of the math. Only sales count.
  • It is flower only. Shake and trim have their own row.

Shake math, same file, same method: $20,456,184.31 divided by 39,802.84 pounds times 16 comes to $32.12 an ounce. If someone dumped shake into the flower line, the blend would land near $52. The CRA didn't do that, so the $59.99 leaves shake out.

The report also doesn't say whether those sales dollars include the 10% excise tax or the 6% sales tax. It never calls $59.99 an out-the-door price. Tax comes up below. Treat $59.99 as the state's flower-sales average and read your own receipt.

Is the Medical Ounce the Same $59.99? #

No. Medical flower averaged $82.34 an ounce in the same September file. That row sits in the medical section, above the adult-use section, in the September 2026 monthly report.

Medical line, September 2026 Amount
Flower pounds 74.74
Flower sales $98,467.81
Average retail flower price per ounce $82.34
All medical product sales $264,549.07

Adult-use flower that month was 102,858.17 pounds. Medical flower was 74.74 pounds. With a pile that small, the medical average can jump around. One medical shop's mix can swing the $82.34 far more than one store can swing the $59.99.

MCL 333.27963 puts the 10% excise on adult-use sales and exempts marihuana sold under the medical acts. A medical card doesn't change which row applies. Ask which inventory the shop is ringing up. If it's adult-use flower, $59.99 is the yardstick, and the 10% still applies.

August's medical ounce was different again. The August 2026 monthly report prints medical flower at $79.96. Adult-use flower in that same file is $60.33.

How Did September Compare With August and Last Year? #

Adult-use sales fell 3.4% from September 2025, and they fell 6.4% from August 2026. The ounce price fell both times, by $3.17 from last September and by 34 cents from August. MITechNews led with the 3.4% drop from last September. The drop from August is steeper. Both percents match the CRA files.

Report Adult-use sales Adult-use flower per ounce
August 2025 $282,842,682.23 $61.79
September 2025 $250,913,798.68 $63.16
August 2026 $258,791,318.00 $60.33
September 2026 $242,263,191.56 $59.99

What moved:

  • September 2026 versus September 2025: sales down $8,650,607, or 3.4%. Flower down $3.17 an ounce, from $63.16 to $59.99, about 5%.
  • September 2026 versus August 2026: sales down $16,528,126, or 6.4%. Flower down 34 cents, from $60.33 to $59.99.
  • August 2025 to September 2025: sales fell from $282,842,682.23 to $250,913,798.68, an 11.3% drop. Flower that month went the other way, from $61.79 to $63.16.

MITechNews uses that 11.3% versus 6.4% pair to argue the 24% wholesale tax can't explain this September's slowdown by itself. The dip was deeper last year, before that tax. The wholesale tax is real, and it sits upstream of the receipt. Our Q2 wholesale-tax piece has the dollar totals and what they mean at the counter.

Pounds of adult-use flower fell with the dollars. September 2026 was 102,858.17 pounds, August 2026 was 108,719.48, and September 2025 was 108,244.97. Less flower moved this September than in either comparison month, and it sold for less per ounce than in both.

Why Does a Detroit Menu Not Say $59.99? #

A menu is one shop's sticker for one jar. $59.99 is every adult-use flower sale in Michigan that month, blended. The September report doesn't print a Detroit ounce or a Wayne County ounce. It prints pounds and dollars, and you can divide those the way the state does for the statewide line. The regional figures below are my own division. The CRA didn't publish them as official averages.

Adult-use flower, September 2026 Pounds Flower sales Dollars per ounce, divided
Statewide 102,858.17 $98,731,558.17 $59.99 (printed)
Wayne 15,533.38 $15,686,834.47 $63.12 (divided)
East and Southeast 37,669.96 $36,402,840.64 $60.40 (divided)

Wayne's all-product total was $28,499,469.03. East and Southeast's was $92,672,165.14. Detroit sits in Wayne County, but a lot of metro Detroit shopping sits in the other region. A shop on either side of the county line can post a price other than $59.99.

The statewide flower line still hides what's in the jar:

  • Bulk ounces and smalls sold as flower pull the average down. Tops and fancy eighths pull it up. The CRA doesn't split those grades. Our smalls versus tops piece covers what the bag weight buys when the buds are smaller.
  • Shake is cheaper and already left out. At $32.12 an ounce it would drag the flower average down. If a menu says "ounce" and the jar is shake, that jar isn't part of the $59.99.
  • A very cheap ounce can sit at the bottom of this average. Price won't tell you if the jar smells like hay or the buds are full of stem. What dirt weed means covers that check.
  • Top-shelf eighths can sit far above the average per gram and still count as flower. They sold, so they're in the blend. They don't set it.

Home delivery is inside the sales total, and it is a thin slice. Adult-use deliveries in September were $3,221,053.85, next to $242,263,191.56 in total sales. The ounce line blends delivery and counter sales together.

What Do the 10% Excise and 6% Sales Tax Add? #

On a normal adult-use sticker, the state adds 10% excise tax, then 6% sales tax on the sticker plus that excise. MCL 333.27963 says the 10% is "in addition to all other taxes," on the sales price. MCL 205.52 is the 6% sales tax on retail sales of tangible goods.

Revenue Administrative Bulletin 2023-25 shows the order with a $100 example. The shop owes $10 in excise. Sales tax applies to $110, so it is $6.60. The customer pays $116.60 if the $100 was the pre-tax sales price.

If the sticker is the pre-tax sales price Excise at 10% Sales tax at 6% of sticker + excise Out the door
$100 (Treasury's example) $10.00 $6.60 $116.60
$59.99 (only if a jar actually rang there) $6.00 $3.96 $69.95
$20 eighth, same method $2.00 $1.32 $23.32

The $69.95 is the bulletin's method applied to $59.99. The CRA report never prints that out-the-door figure. Most menus won't ring an ounce at $59.99 in the first place.

Some shops fold the 10% into the number on the board. The same bulletin shows how to back it out: divide retail marihuana sales, before sales tax, by 11. If the board already includes the 10%, a second 10% on top double-counts it. Check the receipt. Our dispensary ATM fees piece puts that $3.32 of tax on a $20 eighth next to the cash-machine fee. On a small buy, the machine can cost more than the tax.

The 24% wholesale tax is a third layer, and it lands upstream of the receipt. Treasury's FAQ says it applies in addition to the 10% retail excise and the 6% sales tax. It hits the first sale or transfer to a retailer. If a shop passed it on, it's already inside the sticker you're comparing with $59.99. Our wholesale tax explainer covers that layer.

Why an Eighth Is Not One-Eighth of $59.99 #

Split $59.99 into eight eighths and you get about $7.50. A menu eighth is a smaller buy, and small buys cost more per gram. An ounce is 28 grams. An eighth is 3.5 grams. Eight eighths weigh an ounce. The price per gram rarely stays flat when you buy less.

$59.99 divided by 28 grams is about $2.14 a gram. That's the state flower average, spread across all 1,645,730.72 ounces sold. A Detroit eighth is a different buy.

Weight If you pretend the state average is the sticker What people actually compare
1 gram about $2.14 a single pre-roll, often several times that
Eighth, 3.5 grams about $7.50 a menu eighth, often much higher per gram
Ounce, 28 grams $59.99 bulk flower, deals, and tops, all blended

A $20 eighth is $5.71 a gram ($20 divided by 3.5). Eight of those eighths would run $160 for 28 grams. The state average ounce is $59.99. Both are true on the same day. One is a small jar at one counter. The other is every flower sale in the state.

The weeknight version of that math, one joint versus breaking up an eighth, is in 1 gram pre-roll versus an eighth. Use it when you're buying for tonight. Use $59.99 to judge a bulk ounce against the state.

How Should You Use $59.99 When You Shop? #

Use it as a yardstick for bulk adult-use flower, then read the jar, the weight, and the receipt. It won't tell you what the eighth in the case costs.

  1. Match the product. Flower is the $59.99 line. Shake was $32.12 and is a different row. A menu that says "ounce" still has to say what is in the bag.
  2. Match the weight. Compare ounces with ounces. An eighth looks expensive next to $59.99 because it's a smaller package.
  3. Match the month. This average is September 2026. August was $60.33. A board you see in October may show a later price. The state number won't move until the next report.
  4. Split Wayne from the rest of the metro. Detroit is in the Wayne sales region, where my division gives about $63.12 an ounce. East and Southeast divides to about $60.40. The CRA prints neither as an average, and no shop has to match the statewide blend.
  5. Read the receipt before you argue with the board. If the sticker is pre-tax, you still owe the 10% and then 6% on top of that, as in Treasury's $100 example. If the 10% is already in the sticker, the receipt shouldn't add it again.
  6. Keep the cash-machine fee out of the flower math. On a small Detroit buy the ATM can cost more than the tax, but it's its own bill.
  7. Smell the cheap ounce before you call it a win. The bottom of a $59.99 blend can be flower you wouldn't buy. Check for stems, seeds, and a hay smell.
  8. Ignore the medical $82.34 unless the sale is medical. That figure lives in the medical section of the same file.

Divine Toke has no counter, so we don't post this average as a shelf tag. Our list is mail order: 1 gram pre-rolls, and a 20-pack that is 20 of those 1 gram joints for $120. I'm not going to invent an ounce price to "beat" $59.99. To see the state number, open the September report and find the adult-use flower line.

FAQ #

What is the average price of an ounce of weed in Michigan right now? #

$59.99 for adult-use flower in September 2026. That's the printed line in the CRA September monthly report. It is the newest month in the reports used here. It is a sales average, and the state doesn't make shops post it.

Does the $59.99 include tax? #

The report doesn't label it an out-the-door price. The figure matches flower sales dollars divided by flower ounces. On a pre-tax sticker, RAB 2023-25 adds the 10% excise and then 6% sales tax. On $100, that is $10 plus $6.60. A jar that rang at $59.99 before tax would be about $69.95 out the door by the same method.

Is shake included in the $59.99? #

No. Shake and trim are their own row. In September that row was $20,456,184.31 on 39,802.84 pounds, which works out to $32.12 an ounce. The September report keeps that row out of the flower average.

Why is the medical price $82.34 if recreational flower is $59.99? #

They are different sections, and the medical pile is tiny. Medical flower was 74.74 pounds and $98,467.81, and the printed average is $82.34. All medical sales that month were $264,549.07. Adult-use sales were $242,263,191.56. Don't average those two ounce prices together.

Did prices fall because of the 24% wholesale tax? #

Not by itself. September's sales drop was smaller than the same two-month drop in 2025. Adult-use sales fell 6.4% from August 2026 and 3.4% from September 2025. From August 2025 to September 2025, sales fell 11.3%, before the wholesale tax. Treasury says the 24% is in addition to the 10% and the 6%, and it hits the first sale to a retailer. A shop can pass it into the sticker, but it doesn't by itself explain the 34-cent move from $60.33 to $59.99.

Is Detroit flower $59.99 an ounce? #

The state didn't print a Detroit price. Detroit is in Wayne County. Wayne adult-use flower was $15,686,834.47 on 15,533.38 pounds. Divide that and you get about $63.12 an ounce. East and Southeast is a separate region, and its flower divides to about $60.40. A shop in either place can sit above or below its own region.

Should I divide $59.99 by eight to get a fair eighth? #

Only as a paper check. The result is about $7.50, and menu eighths often cost more per gram. $59.99 over 28 grams is about $2.14 a gram. A $20 eighth is $5.71 a gram. Use the pre-roll versus eighth math for a single night. Use the state ounce to compare bulk flower.

Are home deliveries priced at $59.99? #

Deliveries are a small part of the sales total, and the CRA doesn't print a delivery ounce price. Adult-use deliveries were $3,221,053.85 in September, against $242,263,191.56 in total adult-use sales. The flower average blends delivery sales with counter sales.

Is a sub-$60 ounce a good deal? #

It can be, and it can be the bottom of the blend. The average already includes cheap bulk flower. Shake is even cheaper and isn't in the $59.99. Look at the weight, the buds, and the smell. Dirt weed describes quality and says nothing about price. Smalls versus tops covers bag weight when the buds are just smaller.

Where do I see the number myself? #

Open the September 2026 monthly report and find adult-use "Average Retail Flower Price (oz.)." The file is linked from the CRA statistical reports page. Here is the direct link to the September 2026 monthly report. Skip the medical section if you want the recreational ounce. That other line is $82.34.

What to Do With the Headline #

Check the adult-use flower line, then check the jar in your hand.

Adult-use flower in Michigan averaged $59.99 an ounce in September, on $98,731,558.17 of flower sales. Adult-use sales were $242,263,191.56, down 3.4% from last September and 6.4% from August. Medical flower in the same file was $82.34, and shake was about $32.12, each on its own row.

At a Detroit counter, match weight to weight and read the tax lines. Don't let a statewide blend talk you into a jar you wouldn't smoke. The ATM fee is a separate charge, and our fee piece puts a number on it. If the 24% wholesale tax moved the sticker, it's already in the price you see. The Q2 piece has the dollar totals.
