The bag says one gummy is one serving. In Michigan, that gummy can hold 10 milligrams of THC. For someone over 65, that is four times a careful first bite.

My tolerance isn't a typical tolerance. Over 65, do not copy me or any other heavy smoker.

Are edibles safe for seniors? A licensed gummy can be a clumsy first tool. A careful first bite is closer to 1.25 or 2.5 milligrams. The feeling can show up after you have already decided it failed.

If you are still deciding what to buy, the Detroit seniors picker comes first. If the gummy is already in your hand, keep reading.

Are Edibles Safe for Seniors? #

A licensed edible can be a later tool for some older adults, and a clumsy first one. A legal Michigan piece is often 10 milligrams of THC, and the effect arrives late. There is not enough research yet to call a store gummy safe for every body over 65.

What we can say What we cannot say
The legal adult-use piece in Michigan can be 10 milligrams of THC. That 10 milligrams is a gentle first night.
Swallowed THC often takes 30 minutes to 2 hours to show up. That one hour of "nothing" means you need more.
Older adults are often started at 1.25 or 2.5 milligrams. That a CBD sticker shrinks the THC.
Cannabis can add dizziness when you stand. A precise fall rate for gummy users.
Some pills, especially warfarin, need a pharmacist look. That a budtender can clear your chart.

If you have not picked a form yet, start with the cannabis for seniors starter guide. The door, the ID, and the cash are in the first Detroit dispensary visit. Milligram charts for any age are in the edibles guide.

A party-store hemp gummy is a different product from a licensed Michigan edible, and it may not carry the same state test. If a pack looks like a candy brand, the fake-pack piece shows how to check it. This page assumes you are holding a tested piece with milligrams printed on it.

Why Does a Gummy Show Up After You Gave Up on It? #

Swallowed THC often takes 30 minutes to 2 hours to show up. Your liver turns part of it into 11-hydroxy-THC. In one brownie study, the feeling peaked at 1.5 to 3 hours (Vandrey and colleagues, 2017). An hour of nothing is a bad reason to eat more.

11-hydroxy-THC is the second chemical your liver builds after you swallow THC. Smoke mostly skips that step. A gummy does not. The liver chemistry, in plain words, is in why edibles feel different.

Clock What the papers and public pages say
First feeling Often 30 minutes to 2 hours. The CDC edible page uses that window, and says some people eat too much before they feel it.
When the feeling peaks In one brownie study, the feeling peaked at 1.5 to 3 hours and lasted 6 to 8 hours. Vandrey and colleagues, 2017 tested healthy adults, six people at each amount (10, 25, or 50 milligrams). That group was not over 65.
Why it is late The liver pass. Huestis is the pharmacokinetics review. Pharmacokinetics means how a drug moves in, around, and out.
How long it can last Longer than a puff. The CDC page says the effects can last longer than you expected. An empty stomach, other medicine, and alcohol can change that. Health Canada tells adults over 55 that a swallowed product can take up to 4 hours to show its full effect.

The edibles guide tells a general reader to wait two hours before more. Over 65, two hours can still be too early. I would use Health Canada's 4-hour line, and I would not eat a second piece the same evening.

Skip the wine. The CDC lists alcohol as one of the things that can stretch the effect, and the cross-fade explainer covers how the two stack.

How Many Milligrams Should the First Bite Be? #

Use 2.5 milligrams of THC at bedtime on the first two nights. Drop to 1.25 milligrams if you are older, or if you already take other medicine. Do not start at 10.

MacCallum and Russo write the bedtime table this way. Days 1 and 2 are 2.5 milligrams of THC, or 1.25 if you are older or have other concerns. If that sits well, they step up by about 1.25 to 2.5 milligrams, and never faster than every two days. Their paper also says to keep the day's THC at 30 milligrams or less, preferably with some CBD. Finding the right amount can take two weeks. Thirty is a high ceiling from a clinical note. A first Saturday stays at 1.25 or 2.5.

Health Canada tells adults over 55 to choose an edible at 2.5 milligrams of THC or less per piece. That matches the careful first bite. A whole adult-use piece is 10.

The senior oil sheet from the Canadian Coalition for Seniors' Mental Health starts a CBD-plus-THC oil at no more than 1.25 milligrams of THC. That is once a day for the first three days. Oil is easier to measure than a gummy. If you want a dropper that can hit 1.25, the counter post writes out that ask. If you already bought the gummy, skip ahead to the cut.

Number What it is on a first edible night
1.25 mg THC The lower start if you are older, shaky on your feet, or on other pills.
2.5 mg THC Bedtime start on the MacCallum table for days 1 and 2.
5 mg THC Half of a legal adult-use piece. Still double the 2.5 start.
10 mg THC The top of one adult-use edible piece in this state. Four times 2.5.
50 mg THC The medical serving cap on some infused foods, if you have a card. Not a first bite.
200 mg THC The top of one adult-use edible container. Leave most of the bag for other nights.

Michigan's 10 is a legal cap, the most one piece may hold. The state's regulator is the Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA). Its bulletin dated April 24, 2025, under R 420.404, sets adult-use infused edibles at 10 milligrams of THC per piece. The container cap is 200 milligrams. The same table sets medical infused edibles at 50 milligrams per piece and still 200 per container. Drinks are a different row, with 10 milligrams in a serving and 100 in the container.

A medical card does not make 50 milligrams gentle. Adult-use buying in Michigan is for people 21 and older under MCL 333.27955, and the card path is separate. Neither path sets a senior serving size.

There is not enough research yet to promise that 2.5 milligrams will help a knee, a hip, or a 2 a.m. wake-up. You can go up later if the small bite sits well. You cannot untake a 10 milligram piece once it lands.

How Do You Cut a 10 Milligram Michigan Gummy? #

Cut one 10 milligram adult-use gummy into four for about 2.5 milligrams, or into eight for about 1.25. Eat one of those bits, write down the time, and do not eat another bit that night.

A quarter matches the MacCallum bedtime start, and an eighth is the lower start. A half is 5 milligrams, still twice the careful first bite. The bag's "one piece" is the state's maximum, so your first night wants a quarter of it, or an eighth.

Cut of one 10 mg piece About how much THC Night-one read
Whole piece 10 mg Four times the 2.5 start. Put it back.
Half 5 mg Still high for a first bite over 65.
Quarter 2.5 mg Matches days 1 and 2 on the clinical table.
Eighth 1.25 mg The lower start if you are older or on other pills.

How to cut it without fooling yourself:

  1. Read the package. You want milligrams of THC per piece, not the number on the whole bag. A 200 milligram container is twenty of those 10 milligram pieces if every piece is at the cap.
  2. Use a clean knife on a plate. Cut the piece into four bits for quarters. If you need 1.25, cut one quarter in half again.
  3. The THC is mixed through the candy, so a quarter is a fair guess. Crumbs on the knife are lost milligrams you cannot count.
  4. Eat one bit and write down the time. Stay seated. If you work nights or get up for a parent, pick a night when you can stay put.
  5. Stop for the night even if you feel nothing at two hours. The CDC says that extra serving is a common path into a poisoning visit.
  6. If the piece is a hard chunk you cannot split evenly, skip it for night one. Ask for a product with a small number on it. The dropper talk is on the counter page.

Store the rest where a grandchild cannot reach it. A tested gummy can still look like candy to a kid. Keep the leftovers for another night, and do not finish the bag just to get it out of the house.

Is a CBD Gummy or a 1:1 Gummy Gentler? #

Only if the THC milligrams are actually small. A 1:1 sticker can still be 10 milligrams of THC, which is a full adult-use piece. CBD does not reliably cancel that.

CBD (cannabidiol) is a main chemical in the plant, and it does not reliably make you high. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the chemical that can. A ratio only tells you the mix. The THC milligrams tell you the size of the bite.

What the bag says THC in the bite What to do with it
CBD gummy, THC line says 1 mg or less Near the lower start, or under it Still check your pills. Still wait.
1:1, and the piece is 2.5 mg THC with 2.5 mg CBD Equal, and small This can match a careful first bite.
1:1, and the piece is 10 mg THC with 10 mg CBD Equal, and maxed Not mild. Cut it, or leave it.
"Mostly CBD," no THC number Unknown Do not guess. The counter post has the ratio table.

Do not take extra CBD later to "turn off" a bite that got big. In a vapor trial covered on the counter page, a matching CBD number did not soften 10 milligrams of THC. On a gummy, read the THC line before you trust the name on the front.

A CBD-only candy from a gas station is not a licensed edible. If that is what you are holding, the numbers on this page do not apply.

Can a Gummy Make You Dizzy or Drop Your Blood Pressure? #

Yes. Cannabis can make you dizzy, and it can drop your blood pressure when you stand. A gummy is a rough way to learn that, because you may stand up during the hour you still think nothing happened.

Orthostatic hypotension means your blood pressure falls when you go from sitting or lying to standing. Health Canada tells adults over 55 that this drop can bring fainting, blurred vision, and a higher chance of a fall. Other medicine or alcohol can make that worse. MacCallum and Russo list that standing drop as a cannabis side effect. They say older adults need a slow start to avoid it and avoid falls.

Stanford's senior cautions add that older adults clear the plant more slowly. The effect can hang on, and dizziness and confusion raise fall risk. Abuhasira and colleagues followed 184 people over 65 on medical cannabis. Among those still using it at six months, 12.1 percent reported dizziness and 11.2 percent reported sleepiness or fatigue. Those numbers come from a clinic that followed people for months, so night one on a store gummy is a different test. Sleepiness can be welcome at bedtime. Dizziness on a dark trip to the bathroom raises your fall risk.

There is not enough research yet to quote a fall percentage for older adults who eat a licensed gummy. A missing number does not make the risk zero. The usual way it goes: late THC, a blood-pressure pill you already take, a quick stand-up, a hard floor.

Before the bite During the wait If the room moves
First bite at home, not on a ladder, not before a drive. Stay seated. Shoes you can walk in, not loose slippers. Sit or lie down. Skip the stairs.
Tell one person you are trying a new amount. Nightlight on the path to the bathroom. Sip water. Do not drive "to clear your head."
Skip the bath and the wine. Do not take a second bit because you feel normal. Call for help if you have chest pain, trouble breathing, or you cannot stay awake.

If you already get dizzy when you stand, or you have fallen this year, start at 1.25 milligrams. A skin balm or a measured oil may be the kinder form.

What Did Ontario Emergency Rooms See in Older Adults? #

From 2015 through 2022, Ontario logged 2,322 emergency visits for cannabis poisoning in adults 65 and older. Before legal sales the rate was 5.8 per 100,000 person-years. It rose to 15.4 with flower, then to 21.1 with edibles. A person-year means one person watched for one year. These are emergency room visits only, so milder bad nights are not in the count.

The paper is a 2024 research letter, Stall and colleagues in JAMA Internal Medicine (PMID 38767898), published online May 20, 2024. After adjusting for age, sex, and a few health factors, the flower-only period ran about twice the earlier rate. The edible period ran about three times the earlier rate, and higher than the flower-only years.

Period in the letter What was legal in Ontario Rate of those visits
January 2015 to September 2018 Cannabis not yet legal for sale 5.8 per 100,000 person-years.
October 2018 to December 2019 Dried flower, not edibles 15.4. About twice the earlier rate after adjustment.
January 2020 to December 2022 Edibles on sale 21.1. About three times the pre-legal rate after adjustment, and higher than the flower years.
All eight years 2,322 emergency visits. 151 of them, 6.5 percent, were people who already had dementia.

The letter did not separate people who meant to take an edible from people who thought it was a regular sweet. Both end up in the ER with too much THC. The edible years also overlapped the start of COVID, and the authors say they cannot blame every extra visit on the gummy alone.

The 6.5 percent counts people who already had dementia when they arrived. If anyone in your house gets confused about candy, lock the bag up.

Michigan's rules are its own, so Ontario's numbers do not map straight across. The adult-use cap here is still a 10 milligram piece, already four times a careful first bite.

Which Medicines Should You Check Before You Eat One? #

Ask your own pharmacist before the first gummy. Tell them if you take a blood thinner such as warfarin, a blood-pressure pill, a sleep medicine, a benzodiazepine, or an opioid. A budtender in Detroit does not have your chart. Do not stop a prescription because a candy looked gentle.

The cannabis and medication safety guide has the long list. On a gummy night, the difference is the clock: a swallowed piece keeps working for hours, and you cannot stop it like a puff.

CYP450 is the family name for liver enzymes that break down a lot of common pills. Two of them matter here. CYP2C9 helps clear warfarin. CYP3A4 helps clear a long list of other drugs. CBD can get in the way of both. A 2024 review sorts which combinations have clinical evidence and which are still theory. At the pharmacy counter, "liver enzymes" is enough. Then name your exact pills.

Bring this up Why a gummy makes it sharper What to ask out loud
Warfarin or another blood thinner Case reports, not big trials, still treat this mix as one to watch. A review of cannabis drug interactions keeps warfarin on that list. "Could this move my INR (the blood test that tracks how fast my blood clots), and when should we recheck it?" Do not change the pill yourself.
Sleep pills, benzodiazepines, opioids These already slow you down. THC can add sleepiness, confusion, and a fall. Mayo Clinic warns about that stack. "Could this slow my breathing or make a night trip to the bathroom unsafe?"
Blood-pressure medicine You may already drop pressure when you stand. A late gummy can join that drop. "I get up in the dark. Could this make a fall more likely?"
Anything cleared by those liver enzymes A prescription CBD drug, Epidiolex, carries an FDA label full of interaction warnings. A corner of a gummy is a much smaller amount than that drug. Your pharmacist still needs the label. "Tell me if my pill can pile up if I add CBD or THC."

Benzodiazepines are the family that includes many anxiety and sleep prescriptions. An opioid is a pain medicine like the ones used after surgery or for long pain. If you take either, night one is 1.25 milligrams or a decision to skip the gummy.

Take the package to the pharmacist and point at the THC milligrams in the bit you will actually eat, not the bag total. Ask the questions above. If they want you to wait for a lab result, wait.

Frequently Asked Questions #

Are edibles safe for seniors? #

They can be a clumsy first tool, and a 10 milligram Michigan piece is often too much for night one. MacCallum and Russo start people at 2.5 milligrams of THC, or 1.25 if they are older. The CRA bulletin allows 10 milligrams in one adult-use piece. There is not enough research yet to call any gummy safe for every person over 65.

How long should I wait before a second piece? #

On a first night over 65, do not take a second piece at all. The CDC says effects can take 30 minutes to 2 hours, which is why people eat more too soon. Vandrey and colleagues saw the feeling peak at 1.5 to 3 hours in healthy adults eating brownies. It lasted 6 to 8 hours. Health Canada says a swallowed product can take up to 4 hours to show its full effect. The two-hour mark in the edibles guide can still be early. Wait until another day.

Is 10 milligrams too much if I am over 65? #

For a first bite, yes. Ten milligrams is four times the 2.5 milligram bedtime start. It is also the legal top of one adult-use edible piece in Michigan under the April 24, 2025 CRA bulletin. Cut the piece, or pick a smaller product. Do not "see how 10 feels" and plan to ride it out.

Can I cut a gummy into quarters? #

Yes, if the piece is soft enough to split. Treat a quarter as about 2.5 milligrams. An eighth is about 1.25. The mix inside can run a little over or under. Eat one bit and stop. If you cannot cut it evenly, it is the wrong product for night one.

Is a CBD gummy safer than a THC gummy? #

Only when the THC milligrams are actually low. A CBD-heavy name can hide a full 10 milligram THC piece. Read the THC line. The counter post has the ratio table and the trial where extra CBD did not blunt 10 milligrams. A gas-station CBD candy is a different product from a licensed edible.

Does a 1:1 gummy mean I will not get high? #

No. A 1:1 means the CBD amount matches the THC amount. A 1:1 piece with 2.5 milligrams of THC can be a careful first bite. A 1:1 piece with 10 milligrams of THC is the state maximum for one adult-use bite. The CBD in a 1:1 does not reliably cancel the THC.

Can a gummy drop my blood pressure? #

It can. Cannabis can lower your blood pressure when you stand. Health Canada says that drop can bring dizziness, blurred vision, and a fall, especially with other medicine or alcohol. Stanford adds that older adults clear the plant more slowly. The danger with a gummy is the delay: you stand up feeling normal, and the effect arrives while you are on your feet. Sit through the first hours.

Do edibles interact with warfarin? #

They might, and you should not find out alone. A review of cannabis drug interactions treats warfarin as a combination to watch. The record is mostly case reports. A big trial has not settled it. Ask your pharmacist whether to recheck your INR (your clotting test) before you add THC or CBD. Do not change the blood thinner on your own.

What if I already feel dizzy? #

Sit or lie down, skip the stairs, and do not drive. Sip water. Do not take more CBD to cancel it, and do not take another bite. Call for help if you have chest pain, you cannot stay awake, or breathing feels wrong. Next time, use a smaller bit.

Can I drive the next morning? #

Not until you feel like yourself, and a swallowed bite can still be with you after sunrise. There is not enough research yet to name a safe hour for every older adult. The liver path is why the night runs long, and the 11-hydroxy-THC explainer covers it. If the morning feels thick, the car keys stay on the hook.

Does Divine Toke sell edibles? #

No. Divine Toke does not sell gummies, drinks, chocolates, or CBD oil. The brand is Detroit-rooted, sun-grown, and living-soil, and the shop is mail order at divinetoke.org. There is no storefront and no local delivery. The shop sells flower and pre-rolls. Pre-rolls are 1 gram each, and a 1 gram joint is a full joint. The 20-pack is twenty of them for $120.

Are gas-station hemp gummies the same as a Michigan dispensary gummy? #

No. A licensed Michigan edible has a state milligram cap and a safety test. A party-store pack may not. Adult-use dispensary gummies stop at 10 milligrams in one piece and 200 in the container on the CRA bulletin. A pack that looks like brand-name candy is the fake-pack problem. Do not use an unlabeled sweet for a first try.

If a Gummy Is the Wrong First Tool #

You do not have to swallow anything on the first try. A dropper can hit 1.25 milligrams more exactly than a knife and a candy. A balm stays on the knee and is less likely to change the whole night. The counter post writes out both asks.

If you and your clinician do stay with a gummy, keep the bit small and the second bit in the bag. Keep the pharmacist in the loop. The seniors starter guide is the wider read, and the medication guide has the pill list.

Divine Toke is mail order only and does not sell edibles. Whatever form you and your pharmacist land on, start with the smallest amount and give it the full four hours.
