What to Ask For at a Detroit Counter If You Are Over 60
At a Detroit counter after 60, skip the strain names. Ask for CBD and THC milligrams, start near 2.5 mg of THC, and leave concentrates and vape carts behind.

The menu at a Detroit counter is a wall of strain names. None of them tells you how much THC is in the piece. If this is your first legal jar after 60, I'd skip the names.
My tolerance isn't a typical tolerance, so I won't pretend my first night is yours. The best marijuana for seniors starts with two numbers: the milligrams of CBD and of THC in the piece you'll use.
What Should You Ask For at a Detroit Counter If You Are Over 60? #
Ask for a state-tested product with CBD and THC milligrams printed on the piece, about 2.5 milligrams of THC or less, and more CBD than THC. Leave the strain name alone. The person helping you is a budtender, and the Michigan CRA marihuana rules don't put a pharmacist behind that counter.
The door, the ID, and the cash are covered in the first dispensary visit guide. This page starts at the glass. For the wider read, try the cannabis for seniors starter guide. For card paperwork, there's the medical marijuana for seniors guide.
Say this, in this order:
| Say this | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| "Show me CBD milligrams and THC milligrams per piece." | A ratio slogan is marketing. The label has to show both amounts. |
| "I want about 2.5 milligrams of THC or less in the piece I will use." | That matches a standard bedtime start. A legal Michigan edible piece can be 10. |
| "More CBD than THC. Tell me which number is which." | A 1:1 sticker can still hide 10 milligrams of THC. |
| "No concentrates, no vape cart, and no bar I would eat whole." | Those are easy ways to take far more THC than you meant. |
| "I am taking this label to my own pharmacist." | Blood thinners, sleep pills, and opioids are not a budtender's chart. |
CBD (cannabidiol) is a main chemical in the plant, and it doesn't reliably make you high. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the chemical that can. A ratio is just the proportion of the two. It says nothing about how big the piece is.
If you last bought cannabis decades ago, shop like a beginner again. NIDA reports that THC in illegal cannabis seized by law enforcement rose from 3.96% in 1995 to 16.14% in 2022. Flower and concentrates on dispensary shelves can sit above 40% THC. The bag you remember was likely far weaker than the jar in front of you.
Adult-use buying in Michigan is for people 21 and older under MCL 333.27955. You don't need a medical card for that door. A card is a separate path through the Michigan Medical Marihuana Program if a doctor certifies you.
Buy one product for the first week. Write down the milligrams, the time, and how you felt. Change one thing at a time.
What Do 20:1, 2:1, and 1:1 Actually Mean? #
Those ratios compare CBD to THC. None of them tells you how strong a piece is until you read the milligrams of THC. I put CBD first. A 20:1 means 20 parts CBD for every 1 part THC. A 2:1 means twice as much CBD as THC. A 1:1 means the two amounts match. Some menus flip it and write THC first. Ask which number is CBD before you pay.
The clearest human test of "CBD takes the edge off" used neither seniors nor gummies. Englund and colleagues had 46 infrequent cannabis users inhale vapor with 10 milligrams of THC plus 0, 10, 20, or 30 milligrams of CBD. That works out to ratios of 0:1, 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1. Extra CBD did not significantly change what the THC did to memory, how high people felt, or the other effects measured. The trial didn't test 20:1.
Here are the same ratios at two piece sizes:
| Ratio, CBD first | A smaller piece | A full Michigan edible piece | What you can say out loud |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20:1 | 20 mg CBD with 1 mg THC | 200 mg CBD with 10 mg THC | The small piece stays under a 2.5 mg THC start. The big piece holds a full 10 mg of THC under a CBD-heavy name. The vapor trial didn't test 20:1, so make no clear-head promises. |
| 2:1 | 5 mg CBD with 2.5 mg THC | 20 mg CBD with 10 mg THC | Same ratio, four times the THC. In that trial, 20 mg of CBD did not blunt 10 mg of THC. |
| 1:1 | 2.5 mg CBD with 2.5 mg THC | 10 mg CBD with 10 mg THC | Equal doesn't mean mild. The right-hand piece is the legal top for one adult-use edible in this state. |
A prescription mouth spray called nabiximols carries about 2.7 milligrams of THC and 2.5 milligrams of CBD per spray, close to 1:1. MacCallum and Russo bring it up because THC effects are real enough that the spray had to clear drug-safety rules in other countries. The Canadian Coalition for Seniors' Mental Health, or CCSMH, prints the same 2.7 and 2.5 milligrams. It says many adults who use the spray land around 4 to 8 sprays a day. One 10 milligram THC gummy packs several of those sprays into a single candy. You won't shop for that spray here, but it makes a handy yardstick.
Lines I would not trust on a board:
- "CBD blocks the high."
- "1:1 means relief without a high."
- "2:1 will not make you high."
- "20:1 cannot make you high."
The first three go against the vapor trial. The last one wasn't tested in it. A piece with only about 1 milligram of THC may give you very little. There is not enough research yet to say how a 20:1 tincture feels in an older body already taking other pills.
Why Say 2.5 Milligrams of THC Out Loud? #
Because 2.5 milligrams of THC at bedtime is where a standard clinical table starts, and one legal Michigan edible piece can be four times that. MacCallum and Russo write it this way: days 1 and 2, 2.5 milligrams of THC at bedtime. You may start at 1.25 milligrams if you are older or have other concerns. If that sits well, they step up by about 1.25 to 2.5 milligrams, no faster than every two days.
The CCSMH senior sheet starts a CBD-plus-THC oil at 1.25 milligrams of THC or less, once a day, for the first three days. If you're new and over 60, say "2.5 milligrams of THC or less" at the counter. If the dropper can measure 1.25, that's a fair ask too.
The CRA bulletin dated April 24, 2025 sets adult-use infused edibles at 10 milligrams of THC per piece and 200 milligrams per container. It was issued under R 420.404. That's a legal ceiling for sellers, so it won't tell you where to start. The same table sets adult-use tinctures, capsules, and oil drops at 10 milligrams per marked amount and 200 milligrams in the bottle.
| Number | What it is |
|---|---|
| 1.25 mg THC | Lower start if you are older, or if the oil can measure it. |
| 2.5 mg THC | Bedtime start on the MacCallum table for days 1 and 2. |
| 10 mg THC | Top of one adult-use edible piece. Four times 2.5. |
| 100 mg THC | Ten of those 10 mg pieces. Legal inside a container. Not one evening. |
| 200 mg THC | Top of one adult-use edible container on the April 2025 bulletin. |
More people over 65 are trying cannabis. A JAMA Network Open analysis of national survey data put past-month use in that age group at about 4.6% in 2021. By 2023 it was 7%. That counts users. It doesn't show that any product helps a sore knee. There is not enough research yet to name one best marijuana for every senior body.
What Should You Skip on a Michigan Menu? #
Skip high-THC concentrates, anything without a state test and a milligram label, and any edible you'd eat as a whole bar.
Concentrates first: wax, shatter, distillate, and a lot of vape oil. NIDA says smoking or vaporizing those highly concentrated oils is called dabbing, and it can deliver a large amount of THC in a hurry. The same page says dispensary flower and concentrates can exceed 40% THC. A first Saturday over 60 is a bad day to find out what that percent does to your balance.
Unlabeled products next. A licensed Michigan batch has to pass safety tests before it's sold. R 420.305 calls for potency, a foreign-matter check, microbial screening, chemical-residue testing for banned pesticides, and heavy metals. Passed results have to sit in the statewide monitoring system before the batch is released. A gummy from a gas station isn't under that system. Hemp packs are on a federal clock too. The Congressional Research Service says most of the new federal hemp rules are scheduled for December 11, 2026. They include a 0.4 milligram total-THC cap per container. That cap doesn't apply to the shelf yet. I'd still keep a party-store pack out of a senior plan.
Then the 100 milligram bar. The April 24, 2025 CRA bulletin lets an adult-use edible container hold up to 200 milligrams of THC and one piece up to 10. A bar marked 100 milligrams is ten pieces if it's scored that way. If it's one chunk of 100, it's over the per-piece cap for an adult-use edible. Either way, don't eat the bar whole. Ten milligrams is already the state maximum for one piece.
| Leave it | Why |
|---|---|
| Concentrate, dab, shatter, wax | Built to move a lot of THC quickly. NIDA flags dabbing for that. |
| Vape cart on visit one | Often a concentrate in a pen. You cannot see a dropper line. |
| Party-store or unlabeled gummy | No CRA pass, and no milligrams you can trust. |
| 100 mg bar, eaten whole | Ten legal pieces stacked in one bar. |
| "Strongest THC on the board" | A high percent isn't a senior feature. NIDA's dispensary note goes above 40%. |
A skin balm isn't on this list. The bulletin allows a higher THC number on products that aren't swallowed, and the next section covers that. Skip alcohol on the same night too. The cross-fading explainer covers how weed and a drink hit together.
Tincture, Gummy, Topical, or Flower: Which One Do You Point At? #
Point at a tincture to measure a small amount, a topical for one sore joint, and flower only if you already inhale and will stop after a puff or two. A gummy can be the right tool later. It's a clumsy first one. I'm keeping edibles short here on purpose.
Tincture #
A tincture is a liquid you hold under your tongue, then swallow. The CCSMH sheet says oil is easier to measure than edibles. It starts a mixed CBD-plus-THC oil at no more than 1.25 milligrams of THC. On an adult-use tincture, the April 24, 2025 bulletin caps the marked amount at 10 milligrams of THC and the bottle at 200. Ask what one line on the dropper equals in milligrams of THC and of CBD. If the budtender can't answer from the label, pick another bottle.
A gummy, kept short #
One adult-use gummy piece in Michigan can legally hold 10 milligrams of THC, four times the 2.5 milligram start. Don't eat a second piece because nothing has happened at 45 minutes. Swallowed THC passes through the liver and turns into a different chemical, so a gummy can feel stronger and later than a puff. Why edibles feel different explains that part, and the edible buying guide covers reading the package. The late clock, the cut, and the pills to check have their own page: are edibles safe for seniors. Sit down. No wine with it. If your balance is already shaky, start with the tincture or the balm.
Topical #
A topical is a balm or cream you rub on the skin over a knee, a hand, or a back. The CRA bulletin has a separate row for products that aren't swallowed. It allows adult-use items up to 100 milligrams in the application amount and 2000 milligrams in the container. That 100 isn't the same as a 100 milligram chocolate bar. A balm is built to stay on the skin, so a high is less likely than with a gummy, though nobody can promise it. Whether it loosens a stiff joint is still an open question. Tell your pharmacist anyway, especially if it's a patch meant to reach the blood or you're covering a large area.
Flower and a pre-roll #
Flower is the dried bud. A pre-roll is that flower already rolled. You feel inhaled THC within minutes, and it fades sooner than a gummy. One or two pulls, then wait. Don't finish the joint to be polite, and don't buy the highest percent because the board makes it look like a prize.
Divine Toke is a Detroit-rooted, sun-grown, living-soil brand. The shop is mail order only at divinetoke.org, with no counter and no local delivery. Pre-rolls there are 1 gram each, and a 1 gram joint is a full joint. If you and your doctor land on flower, one or two pulls is the start. I won't name a strain for a stiff knee. The 20-pack is twenty of those 1 gram joints for $120. That's a supply for someone who already knows their amount, so skip it on a first try. The shop also lists solventless rosin and bio hash. Both are concentrates, so they belong on the skip list above.
Which Smells Are Worth a Question? #
The smell can tell you what is loud in the jar. It cannot promise a sleepy night or a clear head. A 2024 review looked at the entourage idea, the claim that terpenes team up with THC and CBD. It found early hints, then said the teamwork remains unproven. There is not enough research yet to shop a senior night by smell.
Terpenes are fragrant oils. Pepper, pine, mango, and lavender carry them too. I won't hand you a strain to go with them.
| If the jar smells like | The oil people mean | What you can actually take from the papers |
|---|---|---|
| Mango, earth, or hops | Myrcene | The 2024 review says myrcene has shown anti-inflammatory action on skin in studies, and that pairing it with CBD did not add a clear extra effect. "It will knock you out" is a story the review doesn't back. |
| Lavender | Linalool | The same review lists linalool as a sleep and calm candidate in early work. That's no trial of a retail jar. |
| Black pepper or cloves | Beta-caryophyllene | Gertsch and colleagues showed this oil can latch onto CB2, a dock on some cells that has a role in body signals, in lab dishes. A peppery bud isn't a knee treatment. |
| Pine | Pinene | That 2024 review did not find proof that pinene protects cells in the toxin test it looked at. "It will keep you sharp" is a hope. |
Russo's 2011 essay is where a lot of these smell stories entered cannabis talk. Treat it as a hypothesis.
If you like the smell, say so. Then ask for the THC percent on flower or the THC milligrams on a tincture before you ask what's loud.
What Medication Questions Belong With Your Pharmacist? #
Take the label to your own pharmacist and ask whether this much THC and CBD could change your pills, your balance, or a lab result. The budtender doesn't have your chart. The cannabis and medication safety guide is the longer map. Don't stop a prescription because a jar looked gentle.
Bring every prescription, every drugstore pill, and every supplement. Ask these out loud:
- Warfarin or another blood thinner. "Could this move my INR, and when should we recheck it?" INR is the blood test that shows how fast your blood clots. The published record is mostly case reports, not large trials. A systematic review of cannabis drug interactions still treats warfarin as a combination to watch. Don't change that pill on your own.
- Sleep pills, benzodiazepines, and opioids. "Could this add sleepiness, confusion, slow breathing, or a fall?" Mayo Clinic says cannabis plus drugs that slow the nervous system can add drowsiness and slow your responses. Benzodiazepines are a drug family that includes many anxiety and sleep prescriptions. Opioids are strong pain medicines, like those prescribed after surgery or for long-lasting pain.
- Liver enzymes that clear your other pills. CBD can interfere with CYP3A4 and CYP2C9. Those are liver enzymes, the machinery that breaks down a lot of common medicine. A 2024 review sorts which combinations have clinical evidence and which are still theory. The prescription CBD drug Epidiolex carries an FDA label full of interaction warnings. A small CBD bottle is a different product, but nobody should treat it as a free pass.
- Blood pressure and night trips to the bathroom. "I get up in the dark. Could this make a fall more likely?"
- The exact product in your hand. Milligrams of THC, milligrams of CBD, tincture or gummy or balm, and what time of day you plan to use it.
Call a person, not a blog, for chest pain, a fall with an injury, unusual bleeding, breathing that's too slow, or confusion you can't shake. If you're in cancer treatment, your oncologist comes first. Don't skip that care.
How Do You Read the Michigan Label Before You Pay? #
Read four lines before you pay: THC milligrams in the piece you will use, CBD milligrams in that same piece, the container total, and proof the batch passed testing. R 420.403 tells the producer to put the THC and CBD concentrations on the label, along with the package tag. A CBD-to-THC ratio isn't a required line in that rule. If the ratio is printed and the milligrams aren't, you don't have the fact you came for.
On flower and concentrates, R 420.305 says total THC and total CBD are reported as percentages. On infused products, the lab reports milligrams of total THC and total CBD per gram. At the counter, ask about the piece in your hand. How many milligrams of THC are in the gummy, the dropper line, or the pulls you plan to take?
| Line on the label | What to do with it |
|---|---|
| THC in one piece | Compare it with 2.5 milligrams, and ignore the biggest number on the board. |
| CBD in that same piece | Check that you heard the ratio with CBD first. |
| Container total | 200 milligrams is the adult-use edible top on the April 2025 bulletin. Don't plan tonight around it. |
| State package tag and a passed test | R 420.305 requires passed results in the statewide system before the batch can be sold. No tag, no buy. |
| Other ingredients | R 420.403 says non-cannabis ingredients have to be listed. Glance for an allergy. |
The printed number is a target. R 420.404 says a shop can't sell an infused product that beats the agency maximum by more than 10%. So a label that says 10 can land a little over or under. That's another reason not to start at the legal top.
Photograph the label before you leave the shop. The type is small at home, and a dropper bottle is easy to mix up with a real medicine on the shelf.
Frequently Asked Questions #
What is the best marijuana for seniors to buy in Detroit? #
The best buy is a tested product with the THC milligrams printed, about 2.5 milligrams of THC or less in the piece, and more CBD than THC. I won't name a strain, because the research doesn't crown one yet. NIDA notes that dispensary flower and concentrates can exceed 40% THC, a lot of plant for a first legal jar after 60. Start with the label, then decide whether you want flower at all.
What should I say at the counter if I am over 60? #
Ask for CBD milligrams and THC milligrams per piece, about 2.5 milligrams of THC or less, and no concentrate. Then tell the budtender you're taking the label to your own pharmacist. Adult-use edibles in this state can legally be 10 milligrams of THC per piece under the April 24, 2025 CRA bulletin. Say the 2.5 out loud so nobody hands you the legal maximum as a single serving.
Does a 1:1 CBD-to-THC ratio mean I will not get high? #
No. A 1:1 ratio means the CBD milligrams match the THC milligrams, and the THC can still be plenty. In the Englund trial, 10 milligrams of inhaled THC plus 10 milligrams of CBD did not significantly soften the THC effects in 46 infrequent users. A 1:1 piece that holds 2.5 milligrams of THC is a very different piece from a 1:1 that holds 10.
Is 2:1 gentler than 1:1? #
Only if the THC milligrams are actually smaller. A 2:1 of 5 milligrams CBD and 2.5 milligrams THC is a modest piece. A 2:1 of 20 milligrams CBD and 10 milligrams THC is a full adult-use edible piece of THC. The same Englund trial found that 20 milligrams of CBD did not significantly blunt 10 milligrams of inhaled THC. Ask for both numbers.
Will a 20:1 product keep me clear-headed? #
A 20:1 piece can be very low in THC, or it can hide a full 10 milligram piece if you only read the ratio. Twenty milligrams of CBD with 1 milligram of THC is under the 2.5 milligram start. Two hundred milligrams of CBD with 10 milligrams of THC is the top of an adult-use edible piece. The vapor trial didn't test 20:1, so don't treat "mostly CBD" as a promise. Read the THC line.
Is 2.5 milligrams of THC too small to bother with? #
No. It's the bedtime start on a standard clinical table, and older adults may begin even lower. MacCallum and Russo start days 1 and 2 at 2.5 milligrams of THC at bedtime, with 1.25 milligrams allowed if you are older or you have other concerns. The CCSMH oil sheet starts a mixed oil at no more than 1.25 milligrams of THC for three days. You can step up later if it sits well.
Can I eat a 100 milligram bar if I go slow? #
Don't eat the bar as one piece, even slowly, on a first night. The CRA bulletin allows up to 10 milligrams of THC in one adult-use edible piece and up to 200 milligrams in the container. If it's divided, a 100 milligram bar is ten maximum pieces. If it's one chunk, it's over the per-piece cap. The senior edible guide covers how to cut a piece and how long to wait.
Should a first-timer over 60 buy a concentrate or a vape cart? #
No. Leave wax, shatter, distillate, and vape carts for another day, or for good, if you're new to this. NIDA says dabbing concentrated oils can deliver a large amount of THC quickly, and that dispensary flower and concentrates can exceed 40% THC. A dropper or a balm shows its size more honestly than a pen.
What do I ask my pharmacist before I mix this with my pills? #
Ask whether your exact milligrams of THC and CBD could change your INR, your sleepiness, your breathing, or a fall risk, and when any lab should be rechecked. Warfarin plus cannabis shows up in case reports gathered in a drug-interaction review. Mayo Clinic warns about extra drowsiness with medicines that slow the nervous system. Don't stop a blood thinner, an opioid, or a seizure medicine on your own. The full question list is in the medication safety guide.
Do I need a Michigan medical card to buy at a Detroit counter? #
No. Adult-use cannabis is legal to buy at 21 under MCL 333.27955, with a real photo ID. A medical card is a separate registration through the Michigan Medical Marihuana Program if a doctor certifies you. A card doesn't make 10 milligrams of THC a gentle first night. Card steps are in the medical marijuana for seniors guide.
Should I shop by the terpene or by the milligrams? #
Shop the milligrams. Use the smell only as a preference. A 2024 review said terpene teamwork with cannabinoids remains unproven, even where early papers hint at calm, sleep, or body effects. Myrcene, linalool, beta-caryophyllene, and pinene are real oils with early hints and no proof for a senior night.
Is a 1 gram pre-roll a small start? #
No. One gram is a full joint. Divine Toke's shop pre-rolls are 1 gram, sold by mail, not at a counter. If flower is the form you chose, take one or two pulls and wait. NIDA puts some dispensary flower above 40% THC, so a polite "I'll just finish it" can be a long evening. The 20-pack is twenty 1 gram joints for $120, for someone who already knows their amount.
If You Already Know Flower Is the Form #
You don't have to inhale anything on the first trip. A measured tincture or a skin balm is a calmer way to learn what your body does with a small THC number. If you and your doctor do land on flower, keep the pulls short and the label in the photo roll.
Divine Toke grows sun-grown, living-soil cannabis with Detroit roots and sells it by mail at divinetoke.org. There's no storefront and no driver dropping a jar at the house. The shop lists flower and 1 gram pre-rolls, plus solventless rosin and bio hash. Those last two are concentrates, so skip them for now. I won't match a strain to your knee, your sleep, or your pill bottle. For the wider safety read before you buy anything, start with the seniors starter guide, the first-visit walkthrough, and the medication interaction guide.
